Friends of Historic Heishman’s Mill (FHHM) applied for and received funding for the Heishman’s Mill Portage project during 2022 and 2023 as part of an overall plan to expand the Conodoguinet Creek Water Trail 25 miles west from its current terminus at North Middleton Park to a new Canoe/Kayak Launch at the Newburg Game Lands. Beginning in 2022, FHHM volunteers devoted hundreds of hours in preparing grants and permit applications with the assistance of our consulting engineers Wadel-Mell Engineering. Although funding was received earlier, FHHM ultimately received a Department of Environmental Protection, Chapter 105 joint permit (due to the Mill being on the National Register) in April of 2024. Following being awarded the permit, Construction was scheduled to begin on July 1, 2024. PAFBC Habitat Specialists also assisted in constructing a rock fish habitat structure which is integrated into the Canoe/Kayak take out and which will provide important habitat and enhanced fishing opportunities at the site. Some aspects of the project were not eligible for matching funds from PAFBC (Park Amenities) and the Susquehanna River Basin Commission awarded FHHM a mini grant for these benches and signs.
